Understanding Dilution Ratios
When using products like car shampoo, detergent, or pesticides, you often encounter dilution ratios like 1:500 in the instructions. Let’s learn how to calculate and dilute these products correctly.
What is a Dilution Ratio?
A dilution ratio represents the proportion between concentrate and water. For example, 1:500 means mixing 1 part concentrate with 500 parts water.
Example 1: Creating a 2L Total Solution
The most accurate method is using a graduated container or measuring cup. However, at home, you can easily use a 2L water bottle for calculations.
Let’s calculate based on a 2L (2000mL) container.
Calculation Formula:
- Amount of concentrate = Total volume * (concentrate ratio / (concentrate ratio + water ratio))
- Amount of water = Total volume * (water ratio / (concentrate ratio + water ratio))
For 2000mL:
- Concentrate amount = 2000 * (1 / 501) = approximately 4mL
- Water amount = 2000 * (500 / 501) = approximately 1996mL
Therefore, add 4mL of concentrate to a 2L bottle and fill the rest with water.
Example 2: Adding Concentrate to 2L of Water
If you already have a container with 2L of water, use this formula:
- Amount of concentrate = (Water amount * concentrate ratio) / water ratio
- For 2000mL of water: Concentrate needed = (2000 * 1) / 500 = 4mL
In other words, add 4mL of concentrate to 2L of water to achieve a 1:500 ratio.
